We're getting close!

We made it up to our new house this weekend and this is what greeted us, majestically sitting atop its little hill at the end of the cul-de-sac:

I was reluctant about the siding choice (Stone Mountain Clay with black shutters and a green door), but once I saw it in vivo, I was very pleased - EXCEPT for one major issue - our next door neighbors to the right, who are about a week or two behind us in construction, have the exact same siding. I was under the impression that this was not allowed. When I confronted our SR, the response was, "I made a mistake. Are you guys mad?" If they had built a Venice, I would be furious. Fortunately, they are building a Victoria Falls with partial stone and brown shutters, so the houses will look different enough. On the other hand, our future neighbors to the left one lot over are building a Venice and have chosen the exact same trim. I almost fainted when I heard that.

On another note, our cabinets are in:

 Wyoming Cherry Spice in kitchen

Wyoming Cherry Spice in kids bath

Wyoming Cherry Bordeaux in Master Bath

So far, we are mostly pleased, but, like many bloggers, we are seeing how Ryan cuts corners. To be continued...

  1. Your house is really coming along. Love the cherry cabinets!
I can't believe your SR asked if you were mad. Would it really matter if you were? Would they make the homeowner choose another color? At least it is another floor plan and the stone and shutter colors should help it look different. Our SR was very careful with siding colors since we are in a cul-de-sac also which presents different rules (for those that face each other, etc.). Bummer!
Would like to hear more about the corners being cut if you are willing to share so that we can keep an eye out for them also :)

    1. We noticed lots of little things, like gaps between some of the kitchen cabinets that they covered up with putty; the sliding glass doors don't open and close smoothly; all of the windows are single-hung (we didn't even think to ask about this beforehand); one of the walls along the stairwell in the basement is completely crooked; the kitchen cabinet doors are crooked (I am sure they can and will fix this without my even asking); the insulation around the small window and slider in the basement is missing, you can see to the outside. These are just some of the things we noticed. Overall, everything looked ok and we are happy.

    2. Speak with your PM about all of this!! They will fix it!! Chances are your PM already knows and it's already on his punch list of things to fix. Remember, it's still a work in progress right now. But never be afraid to bring up concerns you have. You are investing a lot of money into your new home. Make sure it's the way you want it to be!

  2. "Would like to hear more about the corners being cut if you are willing to share so that we can keep an eye out for them also" - I would also like to hear; We also chose Stone Mountain Clay with Black shutters, as well as a black door. I really like the combination! How exciting to see the interior coming together!

    1. I wish we could have gotten a black door, but our trim package includes an "Underwater World" door, which is a medium green color.

    2. When we went up to the house last Friday, our door was painted black. I asked our PM about that and he said that it may be primer, and I asked him if we could keep it that way. He said he would look into it. He called yesterday to inform me that the contractors had made a mistake and painted the door to match the shutters and would we like to keep it that way or have it painted green like our original selection. I never really did like the idea of black shutters and a green door, so I was elated. We elected to have the door remain black and I am so relieved!

  3. Your home looks beautiful! I am especially partial to your siding and cabinet choices because that's what we chose too! They look great! I'm sorry about your surprise with the neighbors siding. The different facade will help and the trees will help break things up as they mature. Our SR is on my list right now b'c of three things he screwed up and failed to communicate to us ahead of time so I can relate. Enjoy watching the fishing touches on your home and keep us posted on how your PM addresses the poor craftsmanship you noted.

  4. Your house looks great! We wanted to go w/ the same colors you did but the only siding options with blk shutters were Dover White and Sandtone. I was determined to have blk shutters bc about 80% of our neighborhood has red/burgandy shutters, plus I really like the way the blk looks. So we went with Sandtone. Your cabinets look great too! We haven't seen too many ppl w/ Cherry Spice, so it is exciting to see how nice they look.

  5. Oh, and to add insult to injury, we just found out that they are switching our PM on us! Once they broke ground on our house, 7 lots on my street were sold in one month, so they are slammed. So now, we don't know who to address issues or questions with.

Home for Morris, Sandtone with black shutters is going to look beautiful! We almost went with Sandtone with Navy shutters but a neighbor up the street already had that. You and JBY are the first people I have seen on here that also got the Wyoming Cherry Spice cabinets. Not too many people have them, but I am soooooo happy with how they look so far. I can't wait to see how they look once the hardwood and granite are installed.

  6. I'm disappointed to hear about some of your quality issues. I would make a list of that stuff and tell your new PM that he will NOT receive a 10 or even a 9 without them being fixed.

The house looks beautiful! I bet you guys are getting excited!
